My sweetheart and I went to Lahaina Grill a few months ago, after it received the “Best 2009 Restaurant” from Honolulu Magazine. Yes, there were some wonderful dishes: the herbed butter for the rolls was outstanding. My partner really liked the Shanghai spring rolls on the mixed appetizer plate. And, oh the triple berry pie was to live for!

But his “three meatballs” on pasta for $37? Give me a break. Yes, the quarter-sized spheres were tasty, but if he hadn’t eaten so much bread (and dessert), he’d have left hungry! I had the fresh fish of the day. It, too, was beautifully prepared, but not well enough to be named best restaurant in my opinion. (And I admit to being a foodie, perhaps not as much as Mollie and James. But I have my limited credentials, working as a guest pastry chef in the early 80’s in an upscale San Francisco area restaurant).

There are quite a few other Maui restaurants that will serve you better food for less money in my humble opinion… and I’m sure I haven’t tasted them all yet!
