The wait for a table at Gazebo is legendary. Unless you show up at least fifteen minutes before they open, you’ll be waiting for up to an hour. We like to decide when we want to eat, and then arrive thirty minutes earlier. The free coffee bar on the deck of the pool (yes, you line up along a kidneyshaped pool) helps to keep the edge off the hunger.
Kids tend to love it here, and are treated well. If they have trouble waiting in line, send them to the giant checkerboard just beyond the pool. They can play a game with the coconuts painted red and black while you wait.
The tiny round restaurant has big picture windows all the way round (hence the name) and in whale season we like to sit facing Napili Bay, where the giant animals frolic in the early morning sun.
The food is average American breakfast and lunch fare, and we’re afraid that the view often makes it taste better than it really does (views do that sometimes). We like the omelets better than the pancakes, which — despite their many raving fans — strike us as formulaic, even with the chopped macadamia nuts and the sliced bananas on top. If you like coconut syrup, you can buy some in any supermarket on the island, get a can of macadamia nuts, and pack them for home. Put them on your own pancakes with a dollop of Cool Whip for the same taste, without the too-steep price tag.
When on the West side for breakfast, we tend to migrate a little farther down the bay to Sea House, where the breakfasts are made with more care and better ingredients. We also like Plantation House for breakfast. Mala serves a great brunch on weekends.
