Mixed Plate in the Pukalani shopping center has a split personality: half plate lunch place and half taqueria. The Mexican owner makes wonderful tamales (a little heavy on the masa, but generally full of flavor) and her chipotle pork or chicken mole and are not to be missed. Unfortunately, you’re more than likely to miss both exquisite dishes, because since the restaurant relocated to this spot, the chef shifted the menu towards her local plate lunch clientele and away from slowly simmered Mexican heaven. You can still get a few South of the Border specialties: tacos, enchiladas (and mole if you call ahead) — but the buffet is now dedicated to fried chicken and chili poppers. If you’re exploring upcountry and need a snack — the $2 tamales are a delicious option. Make sure to get some super-sonic hot sauce on the side.
