We had dinner at Capische? the night we arrived in Maui- Feb. 13, 2011.
We had reservations for 6:00 p.m. because I had read the
recommendations to be there when the sun sets. Unfortunately, our
plane was 5 hours delayed and we got lost on the way and I kept
calling Capische? to update them. I was afraid they would give away our
table. They reassured me saying “come on in when you get to the hotel”
and even gave us directions at one point. We arrived at almost 7:00
p.m. and were graciously greeted and seated with a nice note wishing
us a happy anniversary. My husband and I both had a delicious cocktail
    – I recommend the Capische Smash (a delightful concoction made with
Grand Marnier). My braised lamb shank with lemon risotto & savory herb broth was delicious and the waiter recommended the perfect glass of Syrah to accompany it. Hubby’s entree was also wonderful – I just don’t remember what it was since mine was so fabulous. The location is great and the view (would have been wonderful if not for the rain) is
terrific. Very romantic setting. It was the best meal of our entire trip.

My husband & I made reservations at Capische for a romantic dinner after our first full day on Maui on January 23rd. The best I can say is that the entire evening was “off.” Starting with the food, my husband ordered the mushroom truffle risotto, and, following the server’s recommendation, I ordered the beet salad for appetizers. The risotto was rich, creamy, and divine. It was a bit too rich for an appetizer, and I think it would do better on the entree side of the menu topped by lobster or scallops. A few weeks ago, I had a delicious beet salad at Michael Symon’s restaurant Roast, so was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, the execution was a mess. A single deep-fried ravioli with local goat cheese was at the bottom of the plate and was a bland, thick pastry pocket with absolutely no flavor except grease. Even if the rest of the dish was executed perfectly, which it wasn’t, this killed the whole thing. Topping and surrounding the ravioli were large, uneven (~1″ chunks) of partially cooked beet. Not toothsome, more like barely cooked. This was topped by watercress dressed in what seemed to be olive oil (the best part of the dish) with two “schmears” of herbed soft goat cheese on the side which were very bland and lacked the tartness of real curved which was desperately needed. I also wanted to note that we received an amuse buche before the meal which was a tiny bowl of roasted tomato soup with a squiggle of basil oil. The flavors were very subtle, but I think this was because the soup was served lukewarm. In my view, tomato soup should be served ice cold like gazpacho or screaming hot. Lukewarm tomato soup is, Franklin, yucky.
For the entree course, my hubby ordered veal Marsala with au gratin potatoes, green beans, and carrots and was overall quite pleased. The veal was very tender and able to be cut with a butter knife, though the Marsala sauce was a bit too boozy for my taste. The potatoes were tasty and the green beans (but not the carrots which were raw) were well-cooked. I ordered the “Meat and Potatoes” with the optional lobster tail which consisted of a 2″ thick slab of what was supposed to be a ribeye of Kobe crossbred with Black Angus which, as reflected in the $68 price of the entree, was supposed to be meltingly tender. Shockingly, the steak was worse than shoe leather (cooked medium) and could only be hacked and ripped into small pieces with a steak knife. I chewed the first bite for several minutes before I could swallow it, and it had absolutely no flavor at all. The lobster tail was terribly overcooked and tough. The meat was accompanied by tender, but flavorless, asparagus and potato gnocchi in a pancetta sauce. The gnocchi was light, but the overly salty sauce on the gnocchi overpoweree

Maybe our hopes were too high as we saved Capische? till our final night on the island. We couldn’t put our finger on anything that was wrong, but just couldn’t feel the WOW of this dinner. The view is beautiful and the night was lovely. The quail appetizer was very tender and yummy, but is a bit of work for very little reward. Our dinners were Shrimp Carbonarra and Bolognese and both were very good. The Bolognese became just too heavy for my husband, who helped me finish my shrimp instead. The portions could not be called skimpy at all! The ice cream trio we ordered for dessert was OK. We wanted something light so that was about our only choice. The server seemed to be surprised by every choice we made, which made us a bit uncomfortable, but we noticed he had the same style with everyone. Overall, we felt it was a very good meal, but will not likely return since there are so many other options.

My dinner companions and I were really looking forward to dining at Capische? mainly due to the rave review in Top Maui Restaurants and we were sadly disappointed. They seated the 3 of us at a cramped table for 2 (the dining area was less than half full) and we had to ask for a larger table. The service was slow and crumbs from each course were not cleaned up. The botle of white wine we ordered was warm and, after opening, had to be put on ice cubes. The ahi bruchetta was not particularly tasty. We did love the cioppino but my lobster was not fully cooked, too raw, although my companion’s was fine. The prices were way too high, even for Maui. Cafe Ole is definitely a much better value, as is Mama’s Fish House! We dined at 8pm, so we couldn’t appreciate the views, but that wouldn’t have made up for the poor service.

Things were slow at Capishe? on Nov 4th. No one answered the phone and my message requesting a reservation was not returned. I got online and made a reservation via open table. The host/wine steward was doing double duty-and walking in to an empty restaurant always takes away from the ambience. There were only 4 tables occupied on the deck the entire time we were there. The food however was fabulous-and the view as amazing as ever. Tell your friends about Capishe-they deserve your support!

I echo the two previous posts.

Hands down the best on Maui for food and ambiance.

Go at sunset – any table…the view is, well…capische?

I always come here for my birthday. Get the table in the garden in the far corner – it’s so private and it’s like you’re sitting on top of the world. Dessert is the only part of the menu I’d skip. Bring your friends … lived here for ten years and most people don’t know this place. Awesome.

There is no nicer restaurant on Maui for a romantic dinner. Excellent food, had the opakapaka, my husband had ehu, I think. It was perfectly cooked, I didn’t know fish could taste so good. I also liked the ahi bruschetta appetizer. Good wine list. The view is amazing, go at sunset.
