My husband and I decided to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary at DavidPaul’s Island Grill after reading your recommendations . We were really looking forward to a special dinner. I booked our reservation a month in advance on Open Table due to make sure we could get it on Valentine’s Day (our actual anniversary). The restaurant was not full when we arrived and no one was waiting to be seated. Seemed kind of odd considering it was Valentine’s Day…maybe that should have been a tip off. We were greeted and wished happy anniversary by the hostess and seated at a table in the path from the kitchen. Seemed very awkward and the table was small – only 2 chairs seated on the south and east side of a square table. No chairs on the other 2 sides (table was really not big enough for more chairs) left us feeling rather “exposed” . Condensation from the a/c vent dripped on us and we asked to be moved. 2 other couples were seated at that same table and had to be moved! The butter lettuce salad with blue cheese basil vinagrette was delicious. We had to ASK for bread (we noticed other tables receiving some) and were give 1 small roll. No one ever came back to ask if we wanted another roll (would have been nice since we waited 10 minutes for our salad – none was offered with our salad). I ordered their signature Tequila Shrimp with Firecracker Rice. Shrimp
was undercooked….rather soft and squishy. Flavor was bland – not
really spicy at all. Part of the rice was red and that definitely had
more flavor, but, spicy? No flavor of tequilla … the sauce on the
plate was good but hardly enough for the first 2 shrimps! My husband
and I both felt our entrees could use some salt &/or pepper to perk
them up, but, no salt and pepper shakers were visible on any of the
tables, and the waiter never came back to see if we needed anything (he came right after the plates were delivered but we had not eaten anything yet so didn’t know we would want something else) …. so
we ate it as is. When I had 1 shrimp left, he did stop by and ask how
the wine he recommended was (it was a good choice). The bus boy gave
us more attention with water and even talked to us about dessert which
we weren’t even going to bother with until he described his favorite.
It was the best part of the meal so we made sure to tip the bus boy!
Overall, very disappointing! For the $160 we spent it was certainly
NOT worth it. They do have outdoor dining, but it’s right on Front
street. Capsiche was a much better meal, better service, better view
and very romantic! If you want a special meal while you are in
    Maui…. go to Capische!

Just returned from Maui and have to say that David Paul’s Island Grill was the best overall experience we had. We eat early so the restaurant had just filled up when we were leaving, but the service was good, the food was served in a very timely manner and it was HOT. One of my pet peeves is food that isn’t hot when it arrives. Besides the positive experience, the food was absolutely mouth-watering! I had the mahimahi and my husband had Firecracker Shrimp. The Triple Berry Pie melted in our mouths. At the end of our trip, we agreed that this meal very slightly beat out Mala, Mama’s, Hali’imaile, and Capische? for the best overall experience on our trip.
