After an event in Kaanapali (7/19/11) my wife and I stopped by Merriman’s for a late dinner. The kitchen was already closed but after looking at the menu, we asked the club concierge at the Ritz to make a reservation for us the next evening. The hostess, Margot unabashadly fished for a tip, telling us that she could not give us the table that we had reserved because she was saving it for someone who was going to “spend a lot of money!” We stayed for dinner anyway. Garrett was a great server and our meal was fine. The ‘saved’ table was still open when we left the restaurant! We watched her interact with the other customers. She is a nightmare.

Made a reservation for our last night in Maui, with some trepidation after reading James and Molly’s thoughtful, nuanced, but critical review.

Suffice it to say the meal was flawless, but more to the point, the first person we met there was none other than Peter Merriman! Apparently he read the review as well…and appears to have taken it to heart. When he visited our table I told him I wanted to add my voice to those of the Jacobsonls in thanking him for his critical role in the development of Pacific Regional Cuisine. Figured it couldn’t hurt to acknowledge his apparently positive response to the critique in the book by reminding him of the praise that also lies within.

I shouldn’t imagine there is a greater success a critic can have than to nudge a great player back on to his game! Thanks, James and Molly.

Absolutely the most beautiful setting on Maui. Unfortunately, after three times trying this place I will not be going back.At least not for the food.
Each visit starts out great, beautiful setting, cocktail in hand enjoying the view….then the food comes and my wife and I say to each other, “Well, this is OK, but this is just not good.Wow this is salty. How is yours? Mine is not that great. My god the view here is spectacular. Good thing, because the food is not good.”
Peter Merriman or whoever is in charge of the kitchen needs to get with it. Billed as the “Home of Hawaii Regional Cuisine” maybe should be the first warning. How about just making good food without clinging on to a dying trend that was never more than ponzu sauce and sesame-wasabi-soy buerre blanc to begin with.
Speaking of ponzu sauce. It ruined what was a decent lamb shank. The server described what sounded like a beautiful dish. Then it arrived looking absolutely nothing like what was described, then was finished drowned in ponzu!!! A citrus soy with lamb shank!?!
Of our three times dinning here we have had some good dishes. But they are far drowned out by the bad ones.

I made our reservation months ago, but my husband wasn’t too excited about my choice. However, as soon as we pulled up-he started to change his opinion! Wonderful view, wonderful staff, incredible food-and an amazing view. Mark, our waiter, described the menu items in mouth watering detail and made great wine suggestions. Half way through dinner, my husband asked Mark to make a reservation for our last night on the island. The perfect place to celebrate any event-even if that event is your 50th birthday or your last night on the island.

On our last trip to Maui this became our new favorite restaurant. The setting is absolutely breathtaking especially at sunset. The staff is attentive without being invasive which is nice if you are celebrating something special.

Every dish we have eaten there was great, a celebration of local, seasonal ingredients. From start to finish the experience was incredibly positve.

In addition, one night we just wanted dessert and drinks. Although the dining area was nearly full and we had no reservation they found a spot for us and make us feel special. One of their drinks called a Canton Convention was amazing and they were kind enough to get us the recipe. The homemade carmel made with ale over vanilla icecream was to die for.
