Guri-Guri
If you haven’t been to Tasaka Guri-Guri in the Maui Mall, then you have not been taking our advice. Shame on you! It’s a Maui institution, and costs you just $1!
This is not their “secret” recipe, but it is a pretty good stab at a replication. If you’re craving guri-guri and can’t get to Maui, try this at home:
Guri-Guri
3 cups strawberry guava juice or pineapple juice*
1 ½ cups 7 UP® or other lemon-lime soda (let )
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
By hand (takes at least 24 hours):
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and combine thoroughly. Freeze for about 1-2 hours, remove from freezer and stir again, making sure to beat all ice crystals back into the mixture. Freeze again for 1-2 hours and beat again. Repeat at least once more. Scoop partially frozen mixture into freezer-proof containers for individual servings. Freeze at least eight hours (a day is better) until firm.
By ice cream maker:
Combine all ingredients in large bowl and combine thoroughly. Pour into ice cream maker and freeze per manufacturer’s instructions.
*You can use any flavor of juice that appeals to you – please post your success stories below. Also, try coconut milk. Just remember that the juice will be combined with super sweet condensed milk.

Have you tried making it with Diamond Head brand Strawberry Soda instead of juice? That’s the recipe I hear my friends using and I was wondering if you might have tried that as well.

Do you have a recipe using shave ice syrup to accomplish the same result?

Tried this tonight – darn if it wasn’t close to Tasaka’s (nothing like the original). My only problem was that once it got close to done in my ice cream maker it overflowed – getting ready for the second batch now! Thank you so much from Oregon!

Aloha,
your recipe calls for strawberry guava juice. Are you using the ready to drink cans aka Hawn Sun or the frozen concentrate?

We usually use the ready to drink cans (Hawaiian Sun is fine) but sometimes the concentrate … as long as it’s juice!

I made strawberry, pineapple and Mango Guri Guri and all came out perfect, the pineapple tasted just like Tasaka Guri Guri and the mango was so “ono” . I am a Maui boy living in wisconsin so I make all the local favorites for my family and friends as well.

Thanks for the recipe. I made Mango ice cream by taking Odwalla mango smoothie juice with the condensed milk (left out the 7-up). It was absolutely delicious.

Have tried a couple of variations at home-made the mistake of not tasting it while on Maui a month ago. First time it was ok but the juice flavor was not strong enough. Second time found a very thick coconut pineapple juice and cut back on the 7Up by 1/2 cup and it was much better. I even used fat free sweetened condensed milk. Today I am trying ginger peach (ginger ale and peach nectar) with fat free sweetened condensed milk. Made 4 popsickles along with the ice cream…..I think it will be fabulous! Can’t wait to try it this evening! Need to figure out how to make chocolate though!

Mmmm…absolutely delicious! A fine substitute for the real Guri Guri on Maui! I remember when Guri Guri was served with beans when I was little. Although we haven’t been in 3 years, this recipe brought back so many fond memories! Since I have been dieting, I experimented using fat free sweetened condensed milk, and diet 7-Up, amazingly even this fat free version was delicious! Thanks for sharing this recipe with us mainlanders! 🙂

I think I will just try it at the store when we visit Maui in a couple of weeks. That is going to be easier!
