Octoberfest at Brigit & Bernard’s
Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe is a fun little neighborhood joint–the food is good, the beer is cold, and you can get Franziskaner, my favorite hefeweisse (German wheat beer), with a tall, skinny, ice-cold glass. Every fall there’s a series of buffet Octoberfest-themed bashes–complete with an oompa band–and this year we had vowed we would not miss it. Last Friday night they had one picnic table left. (And they might this weekend, too – call 808-877-6000 to find out.)
The buffet offerings ranged from average (sauerbrauten without enough flavor, too-dry chicken) to excellent (tender veal bratworst, carraway-studded pork brats, excellent homemade wheat bread, delicious, crunchy cold sauerkraut). We went back for more, and then ordered dessert–a pretty good apple streudel soaking in a pool of unnecessary, bland vanilla sauce.
We left full and happy. The oompa band provided plenty of entertainment, including lots of rounds of Prost! and some sing-alongs (the musical theater geek in my distant past always melts at Edelweiss). Perhaps my favorite moment was watching Bernard dance the Chicken Dance with his daughter.
