Thanks, Foodland
When we’re looking for a comfort meal at home that doesn’t involve too much cooking, we laze down the road to Foodland in Kihei. We love Foodland for several reasons:
Reason Number One: Poke. (raw fish salad traditional to Hawaii. We love it, and if you like spicy tuna at sushi restaurants, you do, too.)
Reason Number Two: The Parking Lot
James and I are convinced that the parking lots on Maui were all designed and drawn by a guy named Hubert who gets a little tipsy before he picks up his yellow-line-paint-roller. Even in the biggest parking lots you’ll find blind corners, sharp turns, and spaces that are randomly too narrow (like they wanted to fit in just one more).
The Foodland parking lot – I suppose it’s really the Kihei Town Center Parking Lot – is one of the rare exceptions. Every parking spot is angled for safety, and many are actually curbed! There are several big trees in the lot to provide shade, and each is surrounded by a nicely designed grassy curb. Love being able to get in and out of my car without worrying that the next car is going to smash me.
And maybe I’m being terribly picky here, but I like the little lanes just for shopping carts. It’s a small lot, but I never, ever worry that I won’t find a spot there – even though some of the busiest restaurants in Kihei (Sansei, for one), are located here. It’s neat, well-marked, and well-thought-out.
So, thank you to Frank, Joe, Larry, (Linda?) or whoever it was who designed this lot.
I’ll take pics of our sushi handrolls tonight to show you how we use our Foodland poke. De.li.ci.ous.
