Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon
New owners are re-shaping the menu at Charley’s Restaurant, but so far we haven’t seen (or tasted) much to change our original opinion. This is a Maui institution, and its relaxed ambience (especially since a major renovation after a devastating fire), expansive menu, friendly service, and reasonable prices would be enough to take us most of the way to happy. The fact that Willie Nelson plays on a regular basis should take us over the top, but we just can’t ignore the fact that whenever we stop in for anything other than breakfast, we want to delegate the meal-eating to someone else. We know plenty of locals who love Charley’s and make it their favorite meeting place. Nostalgia dies hard, but die it must for us. Go for the live music and the drinks in the bar, and an appetizer or two while you listen.
If you’re hungry, a decent Maui Cattle Company burger will tide you over — but there is much better food (and drinks) on the corner at Milagros or down the street at Flatbread [Or around the corner at Hana Ranch Provisions]. Breakfasts are better, but we’d still prefer Anthony’s or Café Mambo.
