Happy Flowers to Breakfast With
I will bring you happy flowers from the mountains, bluebells,
dark hazels, and rustic baskets of kisses. – Neruda
If Neruda had been in Maui at this time of year, he would no doubt have included the purple blossoms of the jacaranda in his poem. The jacarandas (so fun to say) are in bloom right now upcountry, and I can’t not smile when driving past the clouds of purple. It’s a like a little bit of extra magic in an already magical place. The trees are ubiquitous throughout Makawao and Kula. If you have time, drive out to Keokea with its one gas station, Keokea Art Gallery, and Grandma’s coffee house. If you time your outing for a Sunday morning, ‘ has live music -Hawaiian style – outdoors on the patio. The air will be sweet and cooler than at sea level, perfect for an outdoor breakfast omelette or french toast… and Grandma’s own coffee, grown and roasted locally. Jacarandas, live music, good coffee, good food, fresh air. Honestly, what else is there?
Grandmas is open daily for breakfast and lunch. For more info: www.grandmascoffee.com
The jacarandas are receiving visitors as long as their blossoms last. It’s been raining purple petals lately, so come up soon!
