Maui County Fair!
I’m a sucker for fairs, even when they don’t meet the image I had in my mind. There was the odd, cheap, clubby feeling fair I happened upon in Costa Rica one rainy night while traveling, and a small, dusty fair on the Spanish island of Menorca where I won (and I never win!) a doll that that promptly fell apart as soon as I left the fair grounds. While living in New York, I could, from my apartment window, see the ferris wheel turning on Roosevelt Island and I promptly took two trains and a cable car to get there. First sign of a fair and I oooh and aaah, heading straight for the entrance gate. And I don’t even like roller coasters. But there is just something about a fair, especially at night. I am sure I look like a small child as I wander through the grounds, cheeks flushed, happily taking in the lights and sounds and – oh, the people watching! And this weekend is Maui’s annual fair – opening night was last night. There is much to do, see and eat – choices range from spaghetti and meatballs to chili dogs and local plates. Plus, eating there benefits others. The Spaghetti Booth, for example, is run by Maui Contractors Women’s Auxiliary that raises funds to help with organizations like Children’s Justice Center, Women Helping Women, Ronald McDonald House and the like. So come for the treats, rides, live music, or your entertainment of choice. I’m a fan of the livestock exhibit (I’m keeping my fingers crossed for piglets), and I’m saving room for a caramel apple because really, when else can you get away with eating one after the age of ten?For more information, go to http://www.mauicountyfair.com
