A Pint of Ono Gelato Stays Cold All the Way Home
A few weeks ago we went to the relatively new Ono Gelato in Kihei to sample their gelatos and stack them up against the original location (Paia) and the second (Lahaina). Overall, the news is good–they are making good gelato, just as we would expect. The mounding isn’t quite as high and beautiful as it is in the Lahaina store, and the location isn’t as nice as either of the first two (Azeka is not particularly upscale) … but we did notice one thing we hadn’t seen before …
… pint-sized gel-filled freezer containers! For $12 we got a freezer container, a pint (normally $7.95) and a gift certificate for the next pint, free. We’re pretty happy with that deal.
It would be nice if there were containers pre-chilled for purchase, and it would also have been nice if the scooper hadn’t looked so surprised when we asked if the container had ever been washed before she started scooping our favorite pistachio in … but barring those minor details, we went home delighted.
Pints and freezer containers are available at any Ono Gelato location as of this writing.

Going to try out the Lahaina location gelato this trip; as an Italian, I’m very, very picky and particular. Will have to see if this is as good as the ads say. Thanks for the review.

We love Ono Gelato. It’s one of those things that makes you cringe at the price for the amount you get, but it’s always worth it. We usually hit it up after eating at Flatbread.
I think the location in Paia is great. Haven’t checked out the one in Kihei yet. Thanks for reviewing it.
About the washed out containers, I think most people have trouble with the idea that something new might not be clean. That’s why we like to wash new clothes, wash new dishes and glasses, etc… before using for the first time. There’s a lot of weird stuff that goes down in production as well as in storage and shipping. I certainly wouldn’t expect a teenage girl making minimum wage to understand this.

I loved the gelato but thought the employees working at the Kihei location needed an attitude adjustment. We normally are treated so well when we go out but the employees acted like they hated their jobs.
Kind of dissapointing.
