Makawao Sushi & Deli
Tucked into the back of a little storefront on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao is a tiny little sushi bar — maybe six seats and two tables — where a competent chef makes plate after plate of reasonably good, fresh sushi. We skip the miso (salty) and order a few rolls when we’re upcountry and want fish. We don’t arrive hungry, though, because while the chef is good, he’s not quick. (We’ve caught him sitting down with his customers — while we were waiting for our sushi!) If you’re in the mood for sandwiches, the deli at the front of the store features the usual choices and makes them generous in size. The milkshakes are very good, creamy and thick and made with Roselani ice cream (local, good), which you can also get in cones. The coffee and espresso is very good, and the pastries are worth tucking into, especially the brownies.
