New Favorite Dessert: Butterscotch Pudding?
A friend told us that we had to try the butterscotch pudding at Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Cafe, because it is his favorite dessert on Maui.
We were skeptical, to say the least. Pudding??? But a few nights ago when a sweet tooth hit we headed for Tommy’s at the Shops at Wailea and ordered the pudding and a decaf.
Well call me Scotch and make me walk the plank … that dessert is gooood.
Made by hand every day, it’s a creamy concoction of cream and eggs and scotch whiskey, whirred and chilled until it is set perfectly.
The taste is a deep caramel, with a hint of the scotch. It was lovely with coffee.
The pudding is pretty sweet, and I can’t take too much of it, but if they slopped it in a bowl and smacked it on the table, I’d be perfectly happy.
They don’t. Instead, they take a glass goblet (think the ones that serve old-fashioned five scoop sundaes), coat the inside with a chocolate that hardens into a shell, fill it with the pudding, top with a mound of whipped cream, and drizzle caramel over the whole concoction. There can’t be less than two cups of pudding in this thing – the portion is gigantic. We couldn’t finish it by ourselves, next time we’ll bring friends.
Very highly recommended for anyone who doesn’t hanker after chocolate in the evening.
