Sunrise Cafe
We would call this hole-in-the-wall family-run business quaint if they served excellent — or even just good — food. Instead, we call it something unprintable because of the bad coffee, disinterested, lazy, almost hostile service (we’ve waited thirty minutes to get that bad coffee), and mediocre, commercial ingredients prepared with very little love or attention to taste. While we like the idea of eggs Benedict served with lox on a bagel, it’s not as good as it sounds. The pancakes are stiff, and everything takes thirty minutes longer than it should. The pineapple juice is thirst-quenching, though we suspect “fresh squeezed” might be an “exaggeration.” The prices are low, especially for Front Street, but we think they survive — and have lines out the door — only because they’re one of the only places to get breakfast in Lahaina town. Go to Moose’s or Lahaina Coolers instead.

I love this place! I’ve been to Maui several times and never noticed this little gem until I read about it in a blog. Now I make sure to go there for breakfast several times during each stay. You can walk in an get fresh coffee and some homemade pastries to go. Or, sit in the covered terraced for a filling homemade meal. There is nothing fancy about this place which is why it can be easily overlooked. But, the service is great and the food is wonderful and very reasonably priced. It’s the perfect place to go before an excursion leaving from Lahaina Pier.
