It takes almost as long to design a good eBook as it does to design a good print book. Internal links, proper indexing, and making sure it loads fast, looks good, and — most important — works well — takes a lot of time. So when we ran into glitches with the digital edition of Top Maui Restaurants, we sighed and fretted, but plowed ahead. Because it’s worth waiting an extra week for a great digital edition of a book.
For example: when you’re browsing the “Craving” Index — where I tell you where James and I go when we’re hankering after a particular food (pizza, burgers, great Happy Hours, a sweet treat), you can click on the name of the restaurant to go directly to the review. With hundreds of listings in the four separate Indices, that’s a lot of behind-the-scenes-coding. But that’s the way we roll.
In addition, we listened to our readers and asked our coders to make four separate editions of the book, each optimized for the different eReaders out there. Top Maui Restaurants is now available in digital editions on Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and iTunes iBook (for iPad or iPhone). You can also get a PDF edition direct from the publisher, Maui Media. And Sony and Kobo stores will soon have the book, too. (In the meantime, Kobo and Sony users can get the iBook file direct from Maui Media, it’s a seamless substitute.)
