Fred’s Mexican Cafe
Fred’s offers average Mexican fare to everyone from the families in the front dining room all the way back to the bar — where you can still get food, but the focus is definitely on the tequila.
When Fred’s first opened, they tried: fresh food, stiff drinks, and truly reasonable prices. That was long ago. What used to be $2 Taco Tuesdays went to $2.95 — and the better ones are $3.95. We’ve had one too many toofishy- tasting-fish-tacos, and the price of a margarita worth drinking has been pushed up to $illy. Service is still competent, and friendly, and the view is gorgeous. Still plenty popular, Fred’s is fine if you ratchet your expectations to average and decide to splurge on a top shelf margarita (the house versions give us headaches).

I have been eating on Maui for over 30 years and just had to comment on the lunch I had last week at Fred’s in Kihei. One of the worst meals I have had! I ordered a chicken burrito – what could be easier? It came with corn, what looked liek wild rice and even peas inside. Peas in a burrito?? Yuck and I love peas…………
I won’t go back and will quit referring my friends there.

Coming from Houston we weren’t sure if we wanted to try Mexican food in Maui, but as we were craving it, we just had to give in. We were pleasantly surprised with the food. The carnitas were succulent and delicious as were the chicken fajitas. I wouldn’t recommend the shrimp enchiladas, but everything else was good. The atmosphere was fun and lively and the sunset view was amazing! Fun place to relax and enjoy Maui!

Great for hanging out if you don’t mind noise. Good tacos, go for Taco Tuesdays. Expensive but powerful margaritas.
