Joy’s Place
Joy’s serves high quality sandwiches, salads, and soups to go. The ingredients are invariably fresh and local and whether your thing is nut burgers or free range turkey (roasted inhouse), you’ll find excellent choices.
Sandwiches are generally filled to bursting, and they use sprouted breads or locally-made herb breads. Among our favorite lunches is a turkey sandwich transformed into a wrap, employing a large collard green as the encasement. No matter where you fall on the vegan to carnivore spectrum, we also recommend trying the falafel with the homemade tahini caper sauce.
Smoothies are available, as are pasta salads and soups made fresh from whatever is best in season. The prices aren’t rock bottom, but there’s a lot of love and very good ingredients, and you definitely get the quality you pay for. Plus, Joy and her fellow chefs are unfailingly sweet (if somewhat distracted) and their good juju goes straight into the food.
Joy recently launched a line of raw and live foods called, appropriately, Joy’s Live. A variety of dense, nutrient-packed morsels can be had from the refrigerator next to the register. While the $5 price tag on the raw cacao truffles might give you pause, we encourage you to try them. Even a sliver of the mint truffle is supremely satisfying, though we rarely resist popping an entire one into our mouths. If you can’t get to Kihei, Whole Foods also carries the Joy’s Live line.
If you’re considering Subway for a beach lunch, dash that from your mind and head to Joy’s as a healthier alternative.
