Maui Tacos – Kahului

Maui Tacos was the brainchild of Mark Ellman, the superior Maui chef (Mala, Penne Pasta, and Honu). It has since become a national chain, but the Maui locations — of which there are several — are still making every dish to order and using good, fresh ingredients. Has the love left, now that Mark Ellman is no longer in charge? Yes, but not completely.

The “surf” burritos, tacos, and plate lunch dishes come with beans and rice. As many Californians point out, this is not true Mexican, but it’s still good, inexpensive, fast food. There are numerous vegetarian options and the huevos rancheros breakfast is pretty tasty. The salsa bar features homemade salsas in a range of spices and flavors. There are also pickled carrots and sweet Maui onions. If you’re looking for a quick bite while shopping or after the beach, this is a popular choice.
