Milagros Food Co.
Milagros is our go-to place when we want an island-style Tex-Mex meal made with fresh ingredients accompanied by a killer margarita. The only problem is getting a table at this super-popular, super-visible corner restaurant in Paia. Note to Texans: we know that this is not real Tex-Mex. There is no real Tex-Mex on the island. Want to move here and open a restaurant? That would be great!
What this, is well-prepared, generously portioned food. We love the blackened ahi taquitos, which are spicy and tender inside their super-crispy tortilla shells. The fish sandwich comes with an excellent cut of sashimi-grade ahi, and you can get it blackened. The burgers are generous and satisfying.
The salad plates are more like platters, and the baby spinach salad with seared ahi on top is the perfect light lunch, with leftovers. The enchiladas are excellent, especially the spicy shrimp and seafood versions. The ahi tacos are strangely delicious. We say strange because who would’ve ever thought that adding avocado and sweet chili sauce to a fish taco would be such a slam-dunk? We love the big chunks of fish, but sometimes suspect that they aren’t always the freshest. And we resent that the prices spike in the evening for the same dish. But that hasn’t dissuaded us yet. Breakfasts are average but beautiful in the morning air.
The outdoor seating is hot in the sun (depending upon the angle, the awning doesn’t shade the whole lanai), but perfectly cool at night and in the morning. The people-watching on that active corner is hard to beat. The inside seating is cramped and unpleasant. The drinks are strong, and we already mentioned the margaritas, but we will again, because these (any of these) are the best on Maui. They stock an impressive array of top shelf tequilas, including anejo, reposado, and plata varieties. By the way, Happy Hour drink specials can be had from 11am-6pm.

I’ve eaten here for both Breakfast and dinner. Dinner is here good, but I love this place for breakfast. It is the perfect stop before making your way down the road to Hana and they have the best banana pancakes on the island. It is also a good place to people watch in the mornig and watch all the biker’s coming down from Haleakala.
