Tasty Crust

You probably have a version of Tasty Crust in your own hometown. Picture the diner that’s been open since the fifties (or earlier), hasn’t updated (or cleaned) since the seventies, serves cheap food and lots of it, and brings in business mainly because old habits die hard and food eaten in childhood automatically attains a nostalgic pleasure. The popularity with visitors is limited to, as far as we can tell, people who don’t read this book, but it has its fans from other islands, too. While this is a “landmark” and an “institution,” we wouldn’t choose to eat here unless it was our job — and the staff and owners probably don’t care either way. Sticky tables, surly (at best) service, and stiff pancakes … it compares about the same to our greasy spoons back home, but without our personal nostalgic ties.
